The Director of Adult Education leads MAM’sadult education department in increasing literacy and basic skills among adults in the Houston community. The director collaborates with MAM Leadership and program staff to set goals; then motivates, leads, and facilitates teams, as well as other resources to successfully meet them. 


This position: 

  • Ensures streamlined activities that increase student learning in all areas, with financial stability and family success being the intended outcomes. 

  • Provides and facilitates an engaging, accepting, culturally diverse, and safe environment for staff and volunteers to work, and for students to learn and improve their skills and for volunteers to give back in meaningful ways. 

  • Oversees the programs at all locations with classes offered year-round with morning, afternoon, evening, and Saturday schedules available.

In this role, our director:

  • Manages the employment life of their staff, and ensures that they have the proper leadership, support, and training to best serve the needs of our students. 

  • Are responsible to develop new initiatives for the program. 

  • Externally, there are requirements to cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with our community partners. 

  • Will use their contract negotiation skills for building relationships with other organization to expand our capacity for new sites where we can offer our program to the community.

  • To be successful, all candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field of study. 

  • A TESL certification is also preferred. 

  • While we are seeking someone who has taught English to adult learners, this role does not regularly involve teaching of students/clients.

  • The successful candidate must have demonstrable experience supervising and supporting paid staff under their direct leadership. 

  • Experience leading and supporting community volunteers is helpful and is preferred.

All applying candidates must have reliable transportation, insurance, and a valid driver’s license to commute between the MAM office(s), satellite locations, meetings and training locations. 

This hybrid position will work in our office space, at satellite locations, and remotely from home. Because our classes are for adult learners, our Director of Adult Education must be able to work designated evenings and Saturdays to best supervise and support the staff and programs.
