Department Description

The Fund Development department at MAM has undergone significant growth over the past four years, increasing fund raising revenue by 112%.  A strategic focus has been directed toward donor retention and acquisition in order to support the ambitious program growth set forth in the Strategic Plan. 


Throughout all of the growth efforts, MAM’s community visibility and valued reputation has been enhanced by consistent branding, marketing and public relation efforts.  MAM’s Fund Development staff members work in conjunction with the board of directors, congregational council and community volunteers to develop relationships that will bring valued resources to MAM – today and in the future.


The Grant Writer:

  • is responsible for preparing applications and reports for all grants.

  • is detail-oriented, organized, and able to develop persuasive case statements and proposals, stewardship materials and reports, grant proposal narratives and other donor correspondence.

  • is the lead submitting new and existing grant applications as well as reporting

  • has strong written communication skills, experience writing in a professional capacity, a working knowledge of grant systems, and the ability to work collaboratively with others while also being self-motivated and directed when working alone.

Responsibilities Include:

The Grant Writers's Responsibilities:

  • Develop a complete understanding of the history and mission of MAM and current programming for which grant proposals will be submitted

  • Preparation and submission of proposals and grant applications

  • Research, identify, develop and respond to public and private grant opportunities applicable to MAM client programming

  • Research foundations to assure compatibility between MAM programming and funding guidelines, and analyze funding patterns to determine appropriate dollar requests

  • Develop, maintain and implement annual grant proposal calendar

  • Generate revenue for MAM client programs through timely submission of well-researched, well-written and well-documented grant proposals.

  • Work with Fund Development team to develop compelling messaging for solicitation and stewardship materials

  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple deadlines concurrently

  • Write grant proposals that present a concise, convincing and compelling case for support, accurate and feasible project budgets and meticulous grammar and spelling

  • Ability to work with program staff to design new program descriptions and budgets when necessary

  • Maintains a list of currently funded grants and related deadlines for reports, renewals, and re-applications. Identify funding opportunities and new program areas to match funders’ priorities

  • Writes, edits, collects accurate data from program staff to develop program descriptions,
    proposal content, and client stories for use in annual campaign activities

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of two years of grant writing experience in a not-for-profit organization

  • Commitment to the MAM mission

  • Demonstrated ability to work with persons from all walks of life and treat them with dignity
    and respect

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, and familiarity with Donor Perfect preferred

  • Regularly required to talk and hear

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use keyboard, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms

  • Required to have the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

  • Required to remain at their work station for prolonged periods of time

Work Conditions/Work Environment:

Primary work location is a climate-controlled indoor office environment.  This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Flexibility for travel related to job requirements.
