Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM) exists to strengthen families in our community by ensuring they have the means to meet their basic needs.  We design and deliver community-responsive services to help families to avoid homelessness, take steps toward long-term financial stability, improve their children’s school experience, and access other services and supports.  We are the largest provider of social services in west Houston.  Our holistic, strengths-based approach is grounded in faith, preserves dignity, and is open to all.  At MAM, volunteers, donors and the faith community come together to provide opportunities for families to move past crisis and build skills to improve their lives, resulting in neighborhoods full of families who make our city stronger.

Summary

Job Summary:  MAM is seeking an experienced HR Manager who will report to the President & CEO and will be responsible for developing policy and directing and coordinating human resources activities, such as recruitment, employee relations, performance management, total rewards, safety & risk management, and training & development.  The ideal candidate is an organized, detail-oriented, responsible individual who exercises good judgment, works well with multiple people and personalities, can effectively juggle multiple tasks, and desires to work in a dynamic, growing organization.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Enhance the organization’s human resources by planning, implementing, and evaluating employee relations and human resources policies, programs, and practices.

  • Support organization staff by establishing a recruiting, testing, and interviewing program; counseling managers on candidate selection; ensuring job requirements and job descriptions are current; conducting and analyzing exit interviews; and recommending changes.

  • Prepare employees for assignments by working with executive management to establish and conduct orientation and training programs.

  • Manage a pay plan by conducting periodic pay surveys; scheduling and conducting job evaluations; and recommending, planning, and implementing pay structure revisions.

  • Ensure planning, monitoring, and appraisal of employee work results by training managers to coach and discipline employees; hearing and resolving employee grievances; and counseling employees and supervisors.

  • Implement employee benefits programs and inform employees of benefits by studying and assessing benefit needs and trends; recommending benefit programs to management; directing the processing of benefit claims; obtaining and evaluating benefit contract bids; awarding benefit contracts; and designing and conducting educational programs on benefit programs.

  • Ensure legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable human resource federal and state requirements, conducting investigations and maintaining records.

  • Enforce management guidelines by preparing, updating, and recommending human resource policies and procedures.

  • Retain historical human resource records by designing a filing and retrieval system and keeping past and current records.

  • Cultivate professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and establishing personal networks.

Qualifications:

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal

  • Strong organizational skills, with excellent attention to detail

  • Problem solving skills; ability to anticipate needs and demonstrate critical thinking and sound judgment

  • Flexibility, integrity, and highest standards of professionalism

  • Demonstrated experience in handling confidential matters

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, internet, database software, etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with people from all walks of life and treat them with dignity and respect

  • Desire to be a part of a team and able to work cooperatively

  • Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish)

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university or similar work experience required

  • 5+ years of experience in progressively responsible human resource roles

  • 3+ years of experience in a supervisory role

  • SHRM, PHR/SPHR certification preferred

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly required to talk or hear

  • Regularly is required to stand, walk, sit, use keyboard, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms

  • Required to have the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

  • Required to remain at their workstation for prolonged periods of time
