Growing Our Impact Together...

Every day, roughly half of all Houston area families struggle to meet their basic needs. More than 20% of Houston’s children are growing up in households with income below the $26,500 Federal Poverty Level for a family of four.

Families in financial distress face a multitude of risks from hunger and homelessness, to physical and mental health challenges. Children in poverty face increased neglect, insecurity, disease, and achievement gaps.

For 40 years, Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM) has helped Houston families move beyond poverty and work toward long-term self-sufficiency through education and training, financial empowerment, and community connection. In 2023, MAM served 20,567 people from 17,241 families; 41% were couples with children; 54% had less than a high school education. Creating a Houston in which all families can move into long-term stability requires addressing the multidimensional challenges that hold so many in the tangle of poverty.

Meeting the Demand

Demand for MAM’s programs and services has continued to increase as poverty continues to grow across Houston.
Today almost all MAM programs are at capacity, most with waitlists; lack of space has limited further expansion.

MAM is committed to helping every community member achieve their goals of long-term stability, but adequate
classrooms and offices are needed to offer this support.

To meet the growing community needs, MAM is embarking on a $17.33 million campaign – Growing our
Impact… Together!
– to fund a campus expansion and renovation, which will increase the organization’s
service capacity, enhance service integration and alignment, and maximize outcomes.
MAM leadership
conducted several months of analysis and planning, a feasibility study, and conversations with key stakeholders to
develop a project that meets the organization’s current needs and maximizes building plans in anticipation of future growth, including:

Build Workforce Training and Entrepreneurship Center:

The new 21,000 square foot facility includes 6 additional classrooms for expansion of education and training programs with four classrooms designed to convert to an extra-large multi purpose room for community, staff, and fundraising events.

With this new facility, MAM will serve 2,100+ individuals annually with vital employment services, vocational training, and financial empowerment opportunities, with the goal of expanding core training and education programs by 50% by 2028.

This includes the recently launched INNOVA, an inspiring new program that helps low-income entrepreneurs establish and grow successful small businesses and in turn enhance community vitality. In addition, MAM will deliver navigation and wrap around services to 5,200+ individuals on their journey to self-sufficiency.

The expansion includes a second-floor shell to allow for an additional 19,000 square foot buildout for future growth.

Renovate resale store and warehouse:

MAM Resale generates more than 25% of the organization’s annual revenue; however, the existing warehouse and store cannot accommodate the current volume of donated goods.

This renovation will expand the warehouse by 20%,the boutique by 120%, and add a group volunteer work area to allow for large groups of volunteers to clean, price, and sort items.

These renovations will improve the drop-off experience for donors and reduce time from donation intake to sale. This increased efficiency will advance MAM Resale’s goal to increase earned revenue by $1 million annually and increase volunteer engagement by 100% by 2028.

Reconfigure office environment:

A reconfiguration of existing administrative space will add efficiencies and reflect MAM’s hybrid workforce.

The new design includes workstations, touchdown desks, and huddle rooms that maximize space while encouraging collaboration.

The renovations will also ensure MAM has adequate private meeting spaces critical to delivering high-quality services including financial coaching, mental health counseling, and immigration legal. At completion, there will be workspace for 125+ staff and volunteers.
